Bev Smith has retired from 32 years of teaching music, but not from reaching out with music. During those many years of working with people of all ages, she developed many stories, songs and activities to entertain and instruct her students. She is adept at banjo, guitar, fiddle, ukulele and piano. Fine antiques are beyond her budget; instead, she gathers and performs old time fiddle tunes and authentic folk songs. Storytelling is part of the mix, too. As theater is the ultimate story vehicle, she has directed many plays for the Barn Swallow Theatre and Constantine Public Schools. She has written and produced “The Brave Little Rooster”, an old time bluegrass musical. She has compiled and composed music for “Rough Bark”, a play written by Ruth Andrews. “Almost an Island” is a CD project featuring Bev on all instruments, and including a group of Constantine students on several songs. The tunes cover the span of Michigan’s history from the Voyageurs up to the deadly “White Hurricane” of 1913. Having performed solo and with many area bands in local and regional venues over the years, Bev is delighted to embrace her “hagdom” and to bring stories and songs to the Michiana area with her two winsome sisters, Randi and Ruth.
